Stairs and signing off

Munch figured out the stairs. She can go up and down -- both on purpose.

She left for the grandparents this morning, and will be gone for the week, so no pics. We're heading out shortly to pick my boss up at the airport, and all the action for us starts tomorrow.

Today in the Twin Cities was "Raid Day." It appears that much like in 2004, the anarchist groups were infiltrated, and the police swarmed in today. Also, many of the "indymedia" office spaces were visited. The one we will be using passed whatever security sweep apparently happened -- a given, honestly, since they are inside the security zone and have had people in and out non-stop approving all of their moves. I'm still a little worried that they may get shut down at some point during the convention, just because the powers that can be can, but we'll see.

I'm going to be doing some official work for Minnesota Independent this week, mostly throwing up links and updates on their twitter site. You can find me over here, or hanging out here at night.

The usual twitter will not be having any updates, since I'm going to assume Munch will be too busy having fun with the grandparents to have time to talk to everyone.

This weekend

This weekend, Munchie played with a friend...

and found my stash of newborn trinkets, including her first hat...

On Sunday Munch tried eggs...

and I created a home office out of my sunporch

June approved...

Although Munch quickly had to move in...

Happy First Day of the DNC!

Mommy bought me this shirt almost one full year ago when she was at Yearly Kos, for me to wear for conventions!

(Mom says more pictures and posts later once she shifts through some work)

Blog day for Ashwin Madia

You may remember our last drive, and now it is time to go again. Madia is in probably the toughest Congressional race in the state, and he needs all the finacial help he can get.

Please give, if you can. And as last time, my favorite number is $26, for the $26 dollar women's political campaign, although you can feel free to give as little or as much as you choose.

Tickets gone now

Thanks!

4 tickets to daily show taping on the 2nd

I have 4 tickets and I can't use them. It's Tuesday, and you have to be there by 3:30, which is totally not happening for me.

Contact me.

I WANT YOU

to be patient...posting will be very sporadic until the conventions are over.

Catch up

Things have been busy, but Munchie keeps herself entertained. She's been spending a lot of time playing with rolly-ball.

And on Sunday we went to the Greek Festival in St. Paul, where Munch had a fantastic time.

Sadly, I didn't get any pictures of her doing the flappy arm dance and screeching as we watched the Greek dancers in the tent.
Other than that, it's been all about trying out new foods, especially finger foods.

We've tried pancake, biscuits and carrot wheels.

Baby Curie

(since I assume Baby Einstein is copywritten)

I have been refusing to buy Munch a walker, since I didn't want to spend the money on something I don't think she'll be using for more than a month.

Today, she found her own solution -- she's been walking around pushing her highchair for the last 10 minutes.

Sadly, she got stuck on the wall and can't figure out how to go backwards. I told her she has to make "beep beep beep" noises if she wants to back up, but she won't try it.

Cost Cutting Tip #2 - Over the counter drugs

Thanks to snarkmarket, I just ordered a year's worth of generic zantac 75 for $28, including shipping. I usually spend $18 a month on it at the grocery store, meaning I just saved about $190.

Cost Cutting Tip #1 - Talk to your cable provider

Smartie and I have decided that in an era of economic uncertainty, it would be a worthwhile endeavor to see if we can live on one income. The experiment began August 1st, and we intend to do our best to maintain this for at least 12 months. Because you are always more accountable when you know other people are watching, I'm going to be doing some periodic updates to let folks know how it is going, as well as some tips on things we found useful. Consider it SaveKaryn but without the self-indulgent begging.

Because this is the beginning of the experiment, we are looking this month for places to cut costs. One such place was our Netflix, where we dropped from 5 movies at a time to 4 at a time, saving about $10 a month. But the big saver is the cable bill, since we watch very little tv and even less cable. I called to have our service downgraded, and explained that we don't watch much tv and with a new baby we want to save a little each month. The rep then offered a special which downgraded us just a few channels, but because it was a special it has cut our entire cable/internet bill by nearly $70 a month for the next 6 months. After the 6 months is over, I'll just try downgrading again.

A total of $80 a month may not seem like much right now, but that's about half of the cost of what it takes to keep Munch in formula, so little savings will pay off.

If not, we can start putting the baby to work. I think she may have a future as a bag girl at the supermarket...

Omaha, the recap

The trip was good, although much to quick. I do not recommend flying with an infant if you are alone, but if you have to, I do recommend that you do it with my baby. She fell asleep at the airport on the way out and thanks to a delay got a good chunk of sleep under her belt before we boarded the airplane. She cried a bit as I manhandled her, trying to get her out of the stroller and into my lap once I was settled, but was fast asleep again before we even took off. She sleep solidly until I moved her to stand and get us off the airplane, when she fussed a bit, then went all smiles (and a little vomit) as we finally made it off the craft and to grandpa.

The ride back was a little bit more difficult. We cut it a little too close and made it to the gate as they were already loading. I didn't get a chance to move us from aisle to window (since the window seat worked so well for the ride out), so we were stuck with what we got. And what we got, thanks to a Northwest Airlines employee with a sick sense of humor, was a seat right next to the only other baby on the airplane. Munch wanted to play, which the other baby wasn't too interested in. She also desperately wanted the seat belt extension that they use in the demo, so after she was given that she seemed pretty content. She drank 2 oz during takeoff, then went promptly to sleep and slept until descent, where she got a little frustrated with being in my lap too long.

In other words, she was practically perfect. And I was only slightly frazzled and cranky, especially at Captain Seat-Stealer, the man who was seated in front of me. Once the doors closed there were two seats empty directly across the aisle from me, and I moved the baby and started getting my stuff together so I could move over and stop the ferocious baby battle going on between Munch and her neighbor. Captain S-S turned around, looked me in the eyes as I grabbed my diaper bag, and scurried back into my potential new digs and quickly belted himself in. I thought about scooting myself into the middle seat just so Munch could kick him, but decided moving was too much effort just to make someone else miserable the entire flight.
But in general, a good trip, and a wonderful time with family. On Friday we went out to lunch at Catering Catering, where we shortly had the whole room to ourselves (seriously, I didn't think Munch was crying that much). Afterward, we went to Great Grandma's apartment, where Munch tried out Grandma's walker and had a hand at bear wrasslin'. Later we had dinner with my mom, the other great grandparents and my brother's family, and Munch got to play with her cousin, who just turned one last month. Saturday was more family with a return to Great Grandma and Grandpa's, followed with a party full of cousins and their families. The night ended in fireworks -- the literal kind, before heading off to bed for the 7 am flight.

Too quick as always, but we'll be back in November for Thanksgiving. Thanks to everyone for showing us such a good time!

Ever have one of those mornings...

when the baby grabs your hair and pulls just one too many times, and you go into the bathroom and chop all of your hair off?

Oh, just me, huh?
